Kuhn explains how the same self-service technologies that allow clients to bank or shop online can be applied in healthcare to allow patients to schedule appointments or access lab results online.

In response to the question of why the healthcare industry has lagged behind others when it comes to leveraging the Internet as a customer-facing, self-service interface, Kuhn says "The same Internet technology used in banking, retail, and travel to make life easier for consumers is available to be used in the healthcare space. But, healthcare has some inherent challenges as it relates to the traditional role that a physician plays in communicating with a patient."
